1 year on meds

Last week we had the boys’ 6 month check up (they go every 6 months to make sure they are gaining weight & then just reviewing the last 6 months.) and it went well. They are both growing just fine & there’s no concern with that end of things.

Mark is doing great. He is realizing his actions sooner than he used to. He is trying/learning to manage things instead of allowing his impulses to get the best of him.
For example: a few weeks ago when the boys were leaving school & Mark decided that he was going to walk to a friends house that we didn’t even know. Dominic knew that he shouldn’t be doing that, so he walked home by himself. When Dominic got home and I asked him where his brother was, he explained all this to me. At this point there wasn’t really anything I could do, didn’t have the truck & no one knew where this friend lived. I figured that I would wait until he got home to take care of the situation.
Not too long (about 30 minutes or so) after Dominic got home, Mark walked through the door. Before I even asked why he was late he proceeded to tell me the choices that he made, when he realized what he was doing wasn’t a good idea, and then the choices he made to correct his mistake.

That is HUGE for Mark! I am so proud of him for realizing this and telling me. A year ago this would have never happened.
After giving the dr a recap on Mark, we decided to leave things as they with him. We didn’t see a reason to change anything if it wasn’t needed.

Dominic was what I needed help with at this appointment. He’s fine while on his medicine but the moment that medicine leaves his body, wow, watch out! It’s as bad as it was before we ever started this whole process. It’s really bad in the morning and afternoon/evening. We have tried different things with him, it’s not working. Mister & I are at the end of our ropes with what to do and are really needing some help. I talked with the dr, told him that it was recommended that Dominic have therapy when he was diagnosed, and we decided that this would be a good thing to happen.
So I called the place where they went to get their diagnoses, set up an appointment, and have a therapy session set up for next week. I am so thankful that we were able to get in so fast! Our insurance also covers family therapy, so we are going to take advantage of that also.

I am excited about the new help that our family will be getting. Dominic may have the label but we, as a family, need to learn skills along with him. It’s not just his issue, it’s our issue too.
I will update next week after our first session to let y’all know how it went!

We also have our yearly meeting to review Mark’s 504 plan at school next Tuesday. We are definitely keeping it but don’t know if changes need to be made. Looking forward to what his teachers think and hear their view on things.

Talk to ya next week 🙂

Day 21 – 08/28/12

Hey kiddos,
Another awesome day at school! Hopefully the rest of the year will be like this!
Made cookies and everyone got to decorate their own with gel stuff. We had dinner and then Papa wanted to go on a family walk. Great idea right…yea 3.5 miles later! But you all did much better than I thought! You all rode your scooters. Coleman got into the limo (our double stroller) right at the end. I carried Lily most of the way…she didnt want to be in the stroller this time. Came home and everyone went straight to bed….guess it wore yall out!

Until tomorrow,
Mommie 🙂
Love you 5!

Day 20 – 08/27/12

Hey kiddos,
Today was the first day of school! The house was quiet with 2 of you gone all day! Bailea was sick today so our do nothing day was really lazy! Mark and Dom walked home all by themselves….they have been waiting to do that since last year. They did great and were home around the time it should have taken them. They were all excited and told me all about your day! You both had great days and no homework…bonus!

Until tomorrow,
Mommie 🙂
Love you 5!

Day 19 – 08/26/12

Hey kiddos,
We went to church today like usual. Had breakfast there….its so nice & great that our church has this, makes our Sunday mornings more enjoyable!
Came home and you kiddos had to clean your rooms, bummer! Then we had to get all your school supplies, label them, and get everything in your book bags. We also are starting something new where you get your clothes ready the night before…seems to be working well. The excitment of school being the next day was growing!
Lily is starting to find her arm….just one! She raises her left arm in the air, stares at it, and touches it with her right hand. Its too funny to watch her. She is talking a lot more too! Love her big smiles!

Until tomorrow,
Mommie 🙂
Love you 5!

Day 18 – 08/25/12

Hey kiddos,
Well during the day we all played outside, shocker I know! But then Papa came home from work and asked if we were still going to that back to school party at a church here in town…totally forgot about it! Thank goodness Papa remembered, we loaded everyone up and drove to the church. We had a great time! They had food and games and free books! All 4 of you bigger kiddos won something. You all got your faces painted and Bailea got her nails painted. We had a great time! Came home and went right to bed…we were tired!

Until tomorrow,
Mommie 🙂
Love you 5!

Day 16 – 08/23/12

Hey kiddos,
Today was a great day! You guys played outside, yay! Then in the evening Bailea & Coleman went to Mrs. Ellens house so Austin and Jeanie could watch you. Meanwhile the rest of us went up to the school so we could meet your teachers! You boys were so excited about this! We all liked your teachers and they seemed nice. We stopped and talked to your teachers from last year and a few other people while we were there. You also ran into some friends and old classmates.

That was the BIG deal for the day! Thanks to the D family for helping us out!

Until tomorrow,
Mommie 🙂
Love you 5!

Schools out of summer!!

….well almost & I cannot believe it!
Plus I don’t know about you, but that sing always comes into my head when I say\hear the words “Schools out for the summer!”

This year seems to have flown by! I don’t know if it’s because we have 2 in school this year or that we had so much going on this year or both!

The boys get a school lunch calendar every month & I just put that on the fridge so it makes it easy for me to see when they have early release days and\or days off. This calendar came home last week & I was looking over it to see if May had any days that I needed to remember. I was quickly scanning over the weeks & got to the bottom of the page where it said summer vacation. It took a minute to realize that this was the last month of school! I knew it was coming but it hit me like a ton of bricks seeing it on paper.

As the school year comes to a close I am glad that my afternoons won’t be broken up to stop whatever it is that I am doing to get the boys from school but on the other hand it sends me into a whirlwind trying to figure out what I am going to do with  4 active kiddos + a newborn! Just that thought alone makes my head spin! I definitely have things that I need to look into for this summer.
(That will be another post on another day)

Even though we have had some big obstacles this year with both boys (good & bad) I have to say that I am proud of both of them! I cannot believe that they are old enough to be in school and are doing such a great job! I cannot wait to see what next year holds for both of them & see how they excel!

This summer will be trial & error with the ADHD meds the boys will be on though. And with not much school left, getting feedback from the teachers won’t be the best solely because of the amount of time left. But I know that we will try out best and get our boys the help they need to be even better than they already are!

When is school out for you and\or your children? What are you most looking forward to? What are you not so much looking forward to?

Welcome any & all feedback 🙂
